The turning point

I've never been a huge meat person, never really liked chicken, not a fan of ground beef or any ground meat for that matter - but I've always loved seafood of any kind.  About 2 years ago, we adopted a somewhat plant based diet, except we were still eating fish once or twice a week and eggs and dairy regularly.  After watching the Forks over Knives film, we decided to make an even more drastic change.  I highly recommend watching this film - I found it fascinating how people could quickly reverse their degenerative and life threatening diseases if they were willing to change what they put into their bodies.  If you haven't seen it, check it out - it's also available on Netflix! http://www.forksoverknives.com/

We decided to eliminate all meat (including seafood) and all dairy products.  Going "plant-based: wasn't as hard as I thought it would be because we had phased into it over the past 2 years.  The biggest challenges have been going out to eat, being invited to friends' houses for dinner or cookouts, but we're slowly working through it.  Holidays might be a little bit more difficult this year, but I'm sure we'll figure it out.

I feel so good about how we're eating and that we're not contributing to the terrible way these animals are treated on these factory farms.  By the way, I am not a hippy (not that being a hippy is a bad thing), just a normal person who was very disturbed by what I learned from these documentaries.  These animals are treated so terribly, living their entire lives knee-deep in their own poop, being fed all kinds of antibiotics to keep them from falling ill to the endless bacteria in their environment and eating a completely unnatural diet so they gain so much weight their legs can barely support them.  The sad and scary thing is that most people are unaware of the dangers of eating this stuff and of the miserable conditions these animals live in!  Diseases like Mad Cow and e-coli 0157-h7 are lurking in the meat that is being fed to our people.  Hearing that there are something like 1,000 steer in one package of ground beef is revolting.  Take a peek at this clip from Frankensteer to get an idea of what I'm talking about!  BTW, this film is Canadian - but the same practices are also used in the US.
