Old MacDonald had a .... WHAT?

Up until recently, I lived in a super naive world. I don't think I ever thought twice about where my food really came from.  I'm technically a City girl, so I have no idea how a farm operates.  I had this vision of happy little cows grazing in a field until they grew old and were ready to be sent off to slaughter.  This idea must stem from the childhood "Old MacDonald" nursery rhyme or something.  The documentary, Food Inc. was a very enlightening film.  Did you know that on many of these farms a baby chick is ready for processing in just 49 days?  The chickens' breasts are so big that their legs can barely hold them up.  Something is very wrong with this picture.

It's sad that these farmers are basically forced to participate in this because it's their livelihood.  Raising livestock is all they know.

These chickens are given medicated feed with antibiotics, chemicals and even arsenic in their food.  Their goal is to grow them as big as they can and as fast as they can.  Unless it is labeled organic, this is the chicken you're eating.  What kind of affect does eating this chicken have on our bodies?  Do we even know?  As far as I can tell, no one knows.  So, how about some Arsenic Hot Wings?  I think not.

You have a voice - vote with your wallet and don't support these companies by buying their foods at the grocery store checkout or at the drive-thru.  Remember, the terms "free range", "cage free", "all natural" mean nothing.  The USDA's National Organic Program regulates the standards for any farm, wild crop harvesting, or handling operation that wants to sell an agricultural product as organically produced.   So, if you choose to eat animal products, make sure you purchase USDA ORGANIC products!
